The Pulse in Ayurveda

The pulse, situated at the root of the thumb, serves as a sentinel for life’s vitality. A skilled practitioner with expertise in pulse diagnosis can decipher the subtle nuances of an individual’s health, revealing not only physical well-being but also energetic dynamics at play.

The pulse character is described as resembling the movement of certain animals and birds. Vata pulse is said to be like a snake. Pitta like a frog, and Kapha like a swan. Pulse qualities such as warm, cold, soft, hard, thin, thick, full volume, empty or collapsed, spiral movement, etc. can be ascertained by careful palpation.

Benefits

  • Individual’s constitution and prakriti (natural tendencies and characteristics)
  • Imbalances in the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha)
  • Presence of disease or pathology (e.g. fever, digestive issues)
  • Strength and vitality of the individual
  • Emotional and mental state (e.g. stress, anxiety, mental clarity)
  • Potential for disease or health issues (e.g. predictive diagnosis)

The early hours of the morning are the best times for pulse examination or after practicing

Vata – Superficial, fast, feeble, cold, light, thin, disappears on pressure
